Skill Set (Interpreting and Translating)

A Skill Set is a nationally recognised group of competency units that focuses on developing specific interpreting or translating skills.

It is ideal for students who wish to:

• prepare for NAATI certification
• upskill in interpreting or translating
• study only the required competency units rather than completing a full qualification
• All three courses are nationally recognised and NAATI-endorsed. The main difference is the number of units completed and the qualification awarded upon successful completion.

Although both involve converting meaning from one language to another, interpreting and translating require different skills and are used in different situations.

🎤 Interpreting

Interpreting is the transfer of spoken messages from one language to another.

An interpreter listens to a speaker and delivers the message immediately in another language while preserving the original meaning, tone and intent.

Suitable for students who enjoy:

• Speaking and communicating with people
• Thinking quickly under pressure
• Public speaking and conversation
• Helping people communicate face-to-face

📄 Translating

Translating is the transfer of written text from one language to another.

A translator carefully reads, researches terminology and produces an accurate written translation.

Suitable for students who enjoy:

• Reading and writing
• Attention to detail
• Grammar and editing
• Working independently

• Technical Translator
• Website or Marketing Translator

Can I study both Interpreting and Translating?

Yes.

The Interpreting and Translating Skill Set combines competencies from both areas and provides a foundation for students who wish to pursue both interpreting and translating pathways.

After completing the relevant Skill Set(s), students may be eligible to apply for:

• Certified Provisional Interpreter (CPI) (Interpreting pathway)
• Certified Translator (CT) (Translating pathway)

Yes. Students may choose to pay their course fees in three instalments.

The payment schedule is as follows:

• 1st payment — payable upon enrolment
• 2nd payment — payable one month after the first payment
• 3rd payment — payable one month after the second payment

A $50 extra administration fee applies to students who choose the instalment payment plan.

If you would like to pay by instalments, please send an email to our Student Services team to request an instalment payment arrangement. Our team will provide further instructions.

We offer weekly intakes, with new students able to commence on the next available Monday.

• Are live tutorials compulsory?
  • Tutorials are highly recommended as they provide valuable opportunities for guided practice, interaction with trainers, and assessment preparation. However, recordings are available for students who cannot attend live sessions.
• How long can I access Moodle?
  • Students will retain access to Moodle for 1 month after course completion.

Yes.

Students complete self-paced learning through Moodle and attend online live tutorial sessions via Microsoft Teams.

After successfully completing SIIT's NAATI-recognised Skill Set Course, students meet all NAATI prerequisite requirements for the relevant certification pathway and may apply to sit the corresponding NAATI certification test. Does the Skill Set Course include and complete NAATI's screening modules for Intercultural and Ethical Competency?

Yes. Our NAATI Endorsed Skill Set Course meets all of NAATI's prerequisite requirements, including the Intercultural and Ethical Competency component.
