NAATI-certified interpreter or translator
Are you thinking about becoming a NAATI-certified interpreter or translator? If so, you are in the right place. There are two main pathways to consider.
The first is the NAATI-endorsed interpreting and translating courses, including Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor and Master’s degrees. The NAATI-endorsed courses and providers can be found through the NAATI website: www.naati.com.au. This comprehensive qualification dives deep into the skills and knowledge you need for a successful career in this field. However, one challenge is that it can be tough to find a course that covers your specific language stream, especially if you speak a minor language.
The second option is to pursue a NAATI skill set course. These courses are suitable for candidates whose languages are unavailable from NAATI-endorsed courses. Compared to NAATI-endorsed courses, skill set courses are much shorter and focus on equipping you with the skills and knowledge needed to confidently step into the world of interpreting or translating. Once you complete these courses, you’ll be eligible to apply for the NAATI certification exam. When you pass the NAATI certification test, you will become a NAATI-certified interpreter or translator between English and LOTE languages.
So where can you study interpreting and translating courses in your language?
At the Sydney Institute of Interpreting and Translating (SIIT), we offer NAATI-endorsed Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses in interpreting and translating across eight language streams: Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Nepali, Hindi, Punjabi, Vietnamese, and Arabic. We also provide Skill Set courses for minor language streams. This means that even if your language isn’t widely offered in full diploma programs, you can still find a relevant course with us.
Our Skill Set programs run for about 12 to 15 weeks, depending on which course you choose. You’ll cover units like preparing to interpret, managing interactions, building glossaries, and demonstrating cultural proficiency. Plus, our blended delivery mode combines the flexibility of online learning with live-streamed tutorials, giving you the best of both worlds.
Before you enrol, keep in mind that you’ll need a tertiary qualification and proof of English proficiency. You can meet this requirement through tests like IELTS or by completing our internal LLN test. Also, please note that only residents or citizens of Australia can apply for the skill set courses.
