Description of the Qualification
This qualification covers the competencies required to translate special purpose texts from one language to another, to convey information written using specific terminology for a specific audience in functionally equivalent translated texts that are accurate and appropriate to the context, target audience and end use.
The Advanced Diploma of Translating (PSP60816) prepares translators to translate texts where there may be significant equivalence problems between source and target text, the subject of the text has its own specific terminology, or there is need to undertake extensive research and translate complex language and concepts. Specific audiences may be found in commerce and marketing, government and international relations – including immigration, both regular and humanitarian – the media, and sectors generally considered to be professional, such as law, health and medicine, technology and science. Assignments may deal with material which requires significant quality assurance processes as the consequences of mistranslation can be far reaching.

Entry Requirements
There are no specific entry requirements for this qualification outlined in the qualification description.
However, prior to enrolling in this course the students might either:
- have satisfactorily completed Year 12 of secondary education or tis equivalent, or have appropriate and relevant experience, and
- be competent in English ( a minimum of IELTS 6 or equivalent ) or have NAATI accreditation at papr-professional level in the relevant language or
- have proven and cocumented work experience in translating or interpreting, and/or
- complete a screenning interview with athe Academic Manger of his representative to assess suitablity and capability in completing this qualification; and/or
- demonstrate vocational proficiency through an entry examination. (The entry examination is designed to assess the bilingual competency of student(s), both written and oral. Students must achieve at lease 50 percent in the entry examinations before being accepted into the program), if it is determined as necessary by the Academic Manager, and/or
- If it is determined that the student need to complete a Lanugage, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) test, the student will be required to complete a LLN test to determine whether the student might be suitabel for this qualification or any supporting services might be required during the student’s enrolment as SIIT.
Delivery Arrangements
Students are required to complete 13 units of competency.
Delivery time-frames:
- Approximate delivery hours required to complete the PSP60816 Advanced Diploma of Translating are between 800-1000 hours.
Attendance and academic progress are monitored throughout the duration of the course.
Assessment Arrangements
A range of assessment and evidence gathering methods and techniques are used, including 2 – 4 or more methods for each unit of competency. For this course, methods include:
- Questions and answers
- Case studies/scenario discussions
- Multiple choices/true or false questions
- Interpreting and reflection tasks
- Simulated interpreting practice
- Writing reports/essays
- Formal examinations
